Class Descriptions

Pre Ballet, Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus and Pre Professional / Vocational Levels (RAD)

Creative Movement, Ballet/Tap, Combination - 45 minutes once a week:

Designed for 3-6 year olds focusing on mimetics, development of motor skills and creative expression. Utilizes the Pre Primary and Primary Ballet syllabus. Combination classes introduce beginning rhythmic tap.

Pre Primary Ballet (RAD) - 1 hour per week:

An introduction to Ballet Basics in a program developmentally geared toward 5 and 6 year olds. Children learn the shaping of Ballet movement while continuing creative exploration with emphasis on the overall enjoyment of dance.

Primary Ballet (RAD) - 1 to 2 hours per week:

At the Primary level, students ages 6-8, further develop Ballet skills and class structure while incorporating the beginnings of rhythm and character dance. Improvisation and creative movement are still explored.

Grades One - Three Ballet (RAD) - 2 hours per week:       

Grade Four: 2 1/2 hours per week

Grade Five/ Intermediate Foundation: - 3 hours per week:

The Grade levels will learn Ballet technique, terminology and the discipline of dance. As well, free movement exercises continue to develop the improvisational skills of the dancer. The syllabus includes Hungarian, Russian and Polish Character Dance. Meets 2-10 hours a week. Pointe work is introduced to some students at the Grade IV level and above.

Grades Six, Seven, Eight and Intermediate Ballet: Minimum requirement 3 hours per week.

Pre Professional Level Two (by audition only) 6 hours per week

(3 ballet classes and company class, plus two Jazz classes, one Modern/Pilates and one Musical Theatre and/or Tap class)

Minimum requirement Grade 8, Advanced One and Two Ballet

More advanced technical preparation with emphasis on pre professional training. Students must be placed in the appropriate level by audition. All levels of Ballet Classes meet at least 2 times a week.

NOTE: At Grade Five Level and above, the Saturday company class is required of all students intending to perform with The Austin City Ballet/The Austin City Youth Ballet and En Avant Dance Company. There is an additional fee for Company Class attendance.  Information available at auditions.


Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop and Musical Theatre

Jazz I - VIII - 1 to 4 1/2 hours per week

Technique class focusing on center warm-ups, across the floor progressions and combinations.

Ballet recommended prior to enrollment. Ages 7 - Adult.

Tap I - VI - 1 to 2 hours per week

Technique class focusing on classical technique training and rhythm movement.

Ages 7 and up.

Hip Hop

Levels Beginner/Intermediate and Intermediate/Advanced. Ages 7 and up

Musical Theatre Movement - 1 to 2 1/2 hours per week

Levels Beginner/Intermediate and Intermediate/Advanced Ages 8 - Adult

Teen / Adult Classes

The Austin Conservatory of the Arts is dedicated to providing quality dance instruction in a well-rounded syllabus for students of all ages.  ACA has been operating successfully since 1991 serving Austin and its surrounding communities. The Austin Conservatory of the Arts is the only studio in Austin to offer the graded Ballet program through The Royal of Academy of Dance.  This program affords students the opportunity to further develop skills and gain a sense of accomplishment through assessments and examinations administered by internationally renowned R.A.D. faculty.  The varied syllabus incorporates Classical technique training, Free Movement and Character dance for students taking dance for fun and yet adequately prepares students wishing to pursue Ballet as a career.  Our full range of classes in Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop and Musical Theatre Movement enhance the overall dance education available to our students. 

     The commitment to excellence at The Austin Conservatory of the Arts goes beyond teaching dance.  ACA has created a unique environment that blends professional quality, individual attention and dedication to providing the best instruction.  Our students are exposed to working professionals with international training through our varied faculty.  Our instructors place great emphasis on the proper developmental training of our students, regardless of career goals.  Each student is carefully placed in the level most appropriate to their development.
